Federal Goverment confirms N70bn to be released for road projects

The Federal Government has paid N70 billion out of N102 billion given to the Ministry of Power, Works and Housing, to contractors for road projects.

This was confirmed by the Minister of Power, Works and Housing, Babatunde Fashola at the ongoing town hall meeting in Abuja.

According to him, the contractors will now resume back to their construction sites.

Fashola said the N19 billion initially released from the 2015 budget was grossly inadequate, while stating that there are over 200 on-going road projects valued at N2 trillion under supervision of the ministry.

Fashola revealed that work has commenced at Kano-Katsina road, Port-Harcourt-Enugu road, Lagos-Ibadan expressway, Loko-Oweto Bridge.

The Minister also spoke on power projects in Zungeru and Mambilla hydro power plant in Niger and Taraba States respectively.

He promised that his ministry is committed to ensure the projects are completed.

He corrected the erroneous impression in some quarters that government was managing the affairs of Power Holding Company of Nigeria (PHCN).

According to him, rather than being a government business sector, government is now playing a regulatory role while the power side is private sector driven.
