The Supreme Court of Appeal in South Africa has more than doubled the prison sentence of Paralympic Oscar Pistorius, according to Guardian reports.
Pistorius shot his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp, four times through a locked bathroom door in his home on Valentine’s Day in 2013, claiming he mistook her for a burglar.
Pistorius’ 6-year jail sentence which was described by state prosecutors as “too lenient” has been increased to 13 years and 5 months.
He received the 6-year sentence in July after a successful appeal by state prosecutors to upgrade his original conviction from culpable homicide to murder.
Steenkamp’s family, according to Guardian, said the increased sentence confirms their trust in the justice system. A spokeswoman for the family said:

This is an emotional thing for them. They just feel that their trust in the justice system has been confirmed this morning.
