George Floyd: 'I can't breathe' - Protests over death of black man killed by a white police officer in Minneapolis [VIDEO]

A black man identified as George Floyd, who yells 'I can't breathe' after a white Minneapolis police officer pinned him down with his knee for over eight minutes died on Monday.

A viral video shows a African-American man being pinned down by a police officer next to the back of his patrol car, refusing to ease pressure even as the man complained.

Floyd can be heard saying in the video: "Please, please, I can't breathe." The officer tells him to "relax."

Floyd then responds: "I can't breathe. Please, the knee in my neck."

The police officer continues to pin Floyd down with his knee for several minutes, despite Floyd pleading and asking for water.

Onlookers who was watching as the incident happened urged the officer to get off the man.

"He's not f****** moving,"  one man says. "His nose is bleeding. Look at his nose!" says a woman.

The man died shortly after he was transported to a nearby hospital by ambulance.

In a statement earlier on Tuesday, the Minneapolis Police Department said its officers were responding to a "report of a forgery in progress".

The four police officers involved in the arrest of George Floyd have been fired following his death, and the FBI and the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension have stepped in to investigate.

Floyd was a father and a security guard who worked at Conga Latin Bistro and had previously lived in Texas, said Jovanni Thunstrom, the restaurant’s owner.

Thunstrom described Floyd as the kind of employee who would go out of his way to help a customer, offering a safe ride home to those who had too much to drink and once helping a woman who locked her keys in her car.

Thunstrom told The Washington Post: “When I heard the news, I saw the video, I couldn’t believe it was him,”. He called Floyd a “brother” and a friend. “He was a great person, a great worker. I’m going to miss him.”

A number of Black American celebrities have reacted in outrage to George's death, while thousands have taken to social media to protest.

Hollywood actor David Oyelowo shared share a group photo of some stars, including a white man, wearing a t-shirt with the inscription 'I CAN'T BREATH".

In his post on Instagram, Oyelowo captioned the image: "Our hearts broke as we protested the death of Eric Garner. We now demand justice for George Floyd."
